Risks and Benefits of Using Activated Charcoal in Your Beauty Routine

1

Activated charcoal has been around for a very long time, but it’s only in the recent years that it’s getting the spotlight as a new miracle beauty product. However, is it worth all the hype? We sometimes tend to follow health fads without examining them closely, and this can lead to potential harm. The aim of this article is to examine this beauty trend and see if it has any real benefits and how can we use it in our beauty routines.

What is activated charcoal?

Activated charcoal is carbon that has been processed by high temperatures and gas to create small, low-volume pores that give it excellent absorption qualities. It has been used in medicine to help treat drug overdose or alcohol poisoning, but now it is seeing a much wider range of application. It has the ability to absorb toxins and certain chemicals, and that’s generally the reason people have started using it in various hair and skin treatments, and even as a form of teeth whitener.

Benefits

A lot of skin experts seem to agree that activated charcoal definitely brings benefits to our skin, with its ability to clean it thoroughly and get rid of all the excess oils. Acne prone skin responds to charcoal treatments especially well, and many people have started making facial masks and using it as a gentle scrub. As acne treatments go, this is a pretty good one, as it reaches deep into our pores and gets rid of all the dirt. A lot of spa professionals and aestheticians are using activated charcoal to help resolve various skin problems related to inflammation and even to get rid of cellulite.

2

Another popular way of using activated charcoal is as teeth whitener. The trend is very popular in Australia, where people like to mix a small amount of the substance with their toothpaste, and then brush their teeth twice a day. Everybody seems to have their cosmetic dentist in Sydney on speed-dial these days, so it’s no wonder that this trend is taking off, seeing as Australia is on the list of top countries when it comes to dental health. However, not all professionals are on board with charcoal toothpastes, so it’s best to schedule a consultation before you try anything. The health of your teeth is best left to a good dentist.

Besides the cosmetic purposes, activated charcoal can be used for its original purpose – to help settle your stomach, ease bloating, and collect any toxins related to food or alcohol poisoning.

Risks

The greatest risk of activated charcoal comes in case of an overdose, when it can cause severe cramps, vomiting and diarrhoea. Other than that, it’s actually pretty safe to use, but you should always consult your doctor, especially if you intend to use it in form of capsules.

While there are no great risks involved, there is surprisingly little data that supports the use of activated charcoal and its benefits. Some health professionals seem to think that it’s a passing trend, made popular mostly because of charcoal powder’s intense black colour. The colour makes it look more interesting and so we are easily fooled. Some people also report that it left their faces stained black, and irritated.

3

Final Thoughts

What it all comes down to is that activated charcoal seems relatively safe to use, if seemingly ineffective. But this is mostly down to individual experiences – what works for one person might not work for the next. It certainly doesn’t hurt to try because a lot of people still swear by it. From DIY facial masks to toothpaste, the trend doesn’t seem to be dying out. Luckily, it’s entirely inexpensive; so, you can give it a go to see if it does anything for you. Test it on a small patch of your skin and then have fun experimenting.

Things You Should Know When Reading a Cosmetic Label

1p

Deciding on a cosmetic product that will actually work for your beauty routine is not as easy as it seems – there are so many things you need to take care of before purchasing. It is not just about the beautiful packaging or its wonderful scent – an ingredient list should be your top priority. If you are not quite sure how to read it properly, stay with us. Here are four crucial things you should know when reading a cosmetic label.

Read the label from top to bottom

The first thing you should do before making a final decision is reading the label carefully – from top to bottom, not vice versa. This is essential since ingredients are listed in proportional order – highest quantities are always at the top of the list. Check out the first half of it and see if there are some ingredients you don’t like – if that is so, you may want to leave such product on the shelf. This is particularly important since our skin absorbs around 60% of what we apply to it directly into the bloodstream. That sounds really scary, right?

Is ‘organic’ really organic?

Since there are no laws that regulate ingredients used for the production of organic cosmetic products, you can never be sure whether it is really organic or not. The sad truth is that a company can label their product like that even if it consists of only 1% organic ingredients, which is truly devastating. However, there are certain certification bodies, such as COSMOS, that attempt to establish standards for such cosmetic products all over the globe. In order to get their certification, a brand needs to meet a strict set of standards in order to be recognized as organic. Just make sure that you always go shopping well-prepared – knowledge about specific items will help you choose an appropriate health-friendly product for yourself.

Know your irritants

Knowing about the ingredients that tend to be most irritating is of utmost importance, particularly if you have sensitive skin. Artificially added fragrances are irritants that can make your skin condition even worse, as well as preservatives such as Phenoxyethanol, a compound that retards the formation of bacterial growth. Brands such as Cosmedix have come up with preservative-free products that don’t put you at risk of absorbing those deep into your skin. Parabens also belong to this category, and they are added to cosmetic products to extend their shelf life and stop fungus and other microbes from growing in them. These can actually mimic estrogen and even cause breast tumor cells to grow, so make sure that you have read the label thoroughly before buying in order to avoid these.

Know how to decode expiration date

Decoding an expiration date of a product you are about to purchase is very important, and you should pay extra attention to particular symbols that can be seen on the label. The one with a floating lid jar, with a number and an ‘M’ will tell you the truth. For example, if it says 12M, you are allowed to use the product for 12 months after opening. Blushes, eye shadows, and moisturizers and last up to two years, whereas lipsticks, brow pencils, and eyeliners are appropriate for everyday use for only one year after you open them. When the time is up, you should better throw them away – you don’t want that bad product to go directly into your bloodstream, right?

As you can see, seeking an appropriate cosmetic product is definitely not as easy as it seems – there are so many things you need to know before purchasing. Unfortunately, a wide range of harmful chemicals are a part of formula when it comes to a lot of products, which is why you need to pay extra attention to their labels. Be informed and know exactly what you want – this is the only way to do it right!

Hi Dolls!

I am back with another review of a chemical-free product by a brand Amara organix. Firstly,I would bring to your notice that this brand understands your needs and customises the products for you.In my case, before sending me the samples, they had asked about what all ingredients pose a problem to me.They have sent 2 soaps as well in their basic gift wrapping which I will post about later. 🙂

In the quest for beauty that is safe and natural, we at Amara Organix strive to deliver natural and handmade skincare essentials. We procure our ingredients from the most genuine sources available and use only the purest steam distilled essential oils, cold pressed Virgin nourishing oils, organically farmed honey, exotic oils like Argan ,Maracuja oils and herbs and exfoliates.

To know about them more and their product list, head over here.

Availability: Products can be ordered via whatsapp (+91 8056592923) , Facebook  messenger and mail (Info@amaraorganix.com). They do ship worldwide but it will be costly due to shipping charge.

Price and quantity: ₹350/- for 100 gms. Shipping charge additional ₹50/- within chennai and if out of station – mostly it is ₹70 to ₹80. It is best to order several items at a time.I find the price reasonable for an organic product and the quantity is apt, considering it will last you easily for 2-3 months depending on how severe your hands are dry. Payment to be made via NEFT transfer and Bank Deposit.COD not available.Bank details will be shared when your order is confirmed.

Ingredients: Shea butter ,Aloe Vera extract, Coconut oil, Argan oil ,Tamanu oil ,Frankincense essential oil  and Lavender essential oil

IMG_20160608_205951_786

Packaging: Comes in a simple plastic transparent tub with screwed lid.The tub had a nature-like design all over but it faded away while using it. It only has the product name on it.On enquiring I got to know, its just a sample packaging,so the correct name will be mentioned for sure. :-D.The packaging can be improved as in mentioning of ingredient list, price and expiry. Nonetheless,Mehar, the owner of this brand is very responsive to your queries. They also do customised gift wrapping for party favours/wedding favours/birthday return gifts/event takeaways for corporates etc. Colour/design/theme and budget – everything is customisable and they also work within budgets.

IMG_20160608_205932_063

Name will be changed! 😀

Fragrance and texture: It has a very lavender like smell which is refereshing. Not too overpowering. It has a very light texture and the cream looks offwhite in color.Easily blends into the skin.

IMG_20160608_205912_439

My thoughts: I like my hand creams hydrating but non-greasy.Does this serve the purpose?

Yes!It gets absorbed readily and is not at all greasy. Makes your hands soft for 4-5 hours for moderate dry hands. You need to reapply it though after washing hands.

The tub is sturdy so no issues of spillage. However,if you are travelling and open the tub,the product may stick to the lid and fall.

Didn’t cause any trouble to my eczema prone skin as well.Infact all the ingredients used are good for soothing the eczema skin.

The consistency is such that, you can use it as a body moisturiser also or dry areas of your face.

Overall verdict: Definitely a good purchase.

Skin18.com and their products review

Heya everyone!

You have heard of the Korean skincare, right? It is a speciality of Koreans to focus on the base, rather than covering it up.You may see that Koreans hardly use makeup.

I find it difficult to ever find any of their beauty stuff online or any stores here. I stay in India , by the way.So when Skin18.com sent me these samples to try and review,I knew instantly that finally my wish was granted.

About the website: Skin18 believes in skincare.Skincare products feed natural ingredients  and nutrition to the skin while makeup is considered as coverage.Founder of Skin18 concerns about her skin the most, and their mission is to bring the products that will make everyone look forever 18.

To know about them more and see the products, visit the website.

Samples sent: I received 2 face sheets,4  strips and a face pack.

I also won a giveaway so have received 2 face sheets in that.

My view:

Since most of the samples are written in a language I don’t understand,so it’s best to refer the website for ingredients and usage instructions:

It’s skin Todak Todak pack– Comes in a 10ml size. It is a face pack/sleeping pack.Good for dry skin. Here’s the link for its usage , price and details.

http://skin18.com/products/its-skin-todak-todak-pack-nutrition-wash-off-mask-with-honey-amp-coconut?variant=5827296067&aff=91

I found it moisturizing.I have combination skin and this mask still proved to be good for my skin.It didn’t cause any redness so suited my sensitive skin as well.I used this as a facepack and it still did its job of hydrating the skin.

Foodaholic 3D potato natural essence mask– This is a sheet mask.Good for suntanned skin as it soothes and calms it.

http://skin18.com/products/foodaholic-3d-potato-natural-essence-mask?variant=5322492483&aff=91

I couldn’t use it as it’s clearly mentioned not to be used by people suffering from skin diseases. 😦

Four season Multi Vita brightening active mask– This is also a sheet mask which claims to whiten the skin, but its description reads,it brightens the skin and vitalizes dull skin. I don’t believe in whitening as I love who I am.But it depends from person to person!

http://skin18.com/products/four-season-multi-vita-brightening-active-mask-whitening-function?variant=5507095875&aff=91

I tried it considering its brightening aspect.Brightening means you feel your skin looks refreshed and dullness and dirt is removed. It did remove dirt but I couldn’t see a stark difference to my skin.It may work better for those whose job makes them work outdoors mostly.I take care of my skin diligently,so usually don’t have dull skin.

skin18

Luke charcoal nose cleansing strip and lemon teatree cleansing strip– Now this is the fun part. I don’t usually use nose strips but if you get one,who can stop you? 😉

The satisfaction you get, once the visible gunk is pulled out, knows no boundaries.I have used all the pore strips and each time they made me happy.Charcoal is known to attract dirt and removes the blackheads and tightens it.So I was more excited to try it.

http://skin18.com/products/luke-charcoal-nose-cleansing-strip?variant=11607086342&aff=91

http://skin18.com/products/luke-lemon-tea-tree-nose-cleansing-strip?variant=11605807686&aff=91

I noticed my blackheads literally got sucked out and also, the oiliness went away too for sometime.Mind you! You should use a toner after that or you will get the blackheads back on the same day itself. I did feel  that it stripped away the top layer of the skin as well but after applying toner and moisturizer,it  looked normal.

Beyond The God of patches bye-bye to nose blackheads– Do I need to say more? 😉

http://skin18.com/products/beyond-the-god-of-patches-bye-bye-to-nose-blackheads?variant=8142492227&aff=91

Beyond The God of patches  bye-bye smile lines–  This is the first time I saw a strip meant for wrinkles.I don’t have laugh lines and even if I do,I will embrace it. Graceful ageing,  eh? So naturally I didn’t use it.For this type of strip to work,I feel you need to be regular with its usage.

http://skin18.com/products/beyond-the-god-of-patches-bye-bye-smile-lines?variant=8141650755&aff=91

skin1 1

Four season aloe soothing waterful oasis mask– This one is my favorite as well.It soothed my skin and hydrated it so well.Good for sensitive skin due to aloe extracts.

http://skin18.com/products/four-season-aloe-soothing-waterful-oasis-mask-whitening-function?variant=5506887363&aff=91

skin 18 2

Overall verdict– Sheets masks are all the rage so one should be aware that authencity is the key.Buy from genuine places like Skin18.com. To see the real effects of sheet masks ,use them weekly.Using once a month, won’t show you visible results. Also, prices on this website are cheap,so definitely a yay! From my side. And,if you are someone who loves cute things, their packaging will attract you. My package reached me within a week, safe and sound,so the website does a good job of the delivery system.

Thank you for reading my post. 🙂 If you like my posts, don’t forget to subscribe here by clicking on ‘follow by e-mail’ in the righthand pane . 5 Reasons You Should Be Using Organic Argan Oil In Beauty Routine

For a long time, Argan oil has been in use as one of the best organic beauty products globally.  Most skin and hair beauty therapists recommend the use of the oil to their clients.  The oil is popular in many areas apart from Morocco, where it is a native product. The increased use and popularity can be attributed to the several best advantages and benefits of the oil.  The oil is manufactured from the Argan tree kernels.   The oil is relatively rare, with the Morocco as the only country to find this tree and its fruits.  The oil is natural and saves your skin from the harm that could occur after using too many chemical products.

Organic Argan Oil

All the brands of the oil are high in quality, and they cannot disappoint you. Among them is Izil Natural Argan Beauty.  The oil outshines several other oil brands in the beauty markets and is preferred by several people including celebrities. If you have never used Argan Oil, then it means that you have not learned of the several benefits.  The product is non-greasy and is easy for both the hair and the skin to absorb.  The smell of the oil products is also pleasant, and thus, there is no need to worry about the unpleasant smell.  If you learn the benefits, then it will be a good start to consider adding the product into the beauty routine.

  1. Skin Moisturizer

The product is very rich in both Vitamin E and even the fatty acids.  Besides, the oil has anti-inflammatory characteristics.  At the same time, it is critical and vital for conditioning the skin. For all these reasons, the oil becomes one of the perfect skin moisturizers available in the market.  It helps in maintaining a supple skin free from dryness, itchiness as well as flakiness. It is commonly used among persons suffering from chronic skin dryness as well as psoriasis. Furthermore, it protects the skin against aging effects. It will help you get rid of under eye bags and lines as well as the fine lines on the skin. It prevents wrinkling and also keeps the skin smooth and also radiant.

  1. Hair styling and Scalp Soothing

Using the oil can help you to easily and quickly style your hair.  Besides, you can use the organic oil to soothe and also increase the shine of the hair. For individuals suffering from scalp dryness or even dandruff, the oil can be vital and essential in eliminating the two.  Gently use the oil for scalp massaging to ensure it is both hydrated and nourished. Also, the massage clears any available flakes.

For Hair

  1. Stretch Marks Prevention

The product is also vital for improving and increasing skin elasticity. The presence of Vitamin E makes the function easier. During pregnancy, using the oil can help in reducing and eliminating those stretch marks. Furthermore, using it at an early stage works in the prevention of the stretch marks. Slather and then apply on the breasts in a gentle manner, the hips, or the thighs and any other places that are likely to have stretch marks.  It makes the skin smooth and keeps away the stretch marks.

  1. Acne Treatment

For a natural acne treatment, the oil is a perfect choice. It is vital for making the skin smoother than before. Besides, it promotes the skin healing process in case of acne or pimples. In other words, it is both preventive and curative.  It is also good for the production of sebum.  An essential tip while selecting skin oils or creams is that it is critical to avoid comedogenic products. They can easily cause acne issues on the skin.

For Skin

  1. Hand and Nail Treatment

Since Argan Oil is intensive in hydrating the skin, it is considered to be vital for the treatment of both the nails and the hands.  You need to rub the oil and ensure you focus on the nails. You can do the hack just before sleeping.  It treats the hands as well as the cuticles that may have cracked.  The oil makes the nails shiny while making the hands, soft, youthful as well as strong.

Conclusion

Apparently, the organic oil has several benefits and uses. It moisturizes, fights aging as well as works for the treatment of the hands and the nails. At the same time, it is critical for the scalp and hair care. The functions should encourage you to try the oil and use it more often. It is entirely natural and can have no side effects or harmful results on the skin. It gives quicker results than most of the other oils.  While selecting the oils, be wise to ensure that the oil does not have added chemicals. These could harm the skin.

Health and beauty tips for Summer

Bon Jour everyone!

I have returned from my Europe trip and  to be honest,I didn’t want to return.Like every tourist,I too fell in Love,so intoxicating so addictive.Umn No! I don’t mean a boyfriend but I fell in love with the cities, the culture and the places.

It is blazing hot in Northern India, which waited for me once I got outside the New Delhi International Airport.Perfect timing for my next post!

I follow simple skincare and healthcare for my body and it saves me time, keeps me energetic and makes my skin ‘look’ less problematic.(I have eczema on my face currently due to something I ate or weather during my travel in  Europe.)

  1. You know it.I know it.Drink water, loads of it.I used to drink 1-1.5 l but saw the difference when I crossed 2 l.You have a glow on your face, keeps you energetic and reduces that hunger pang you get around mid day and also, your skin actually looks hydrated.
  2. If you stay in a region where it is very hot or dusty, like I do,it is best to cover your face with a scarf. In India, you will see so many girls walking around looking like a dacoit. 😛 They do so,or I do it to save myself from sun tan and skin damage. We do use sunscreen, but prefer a natural alternative . 😀 I guess this is the secret of the beautiful ladies in burqa-clad regions. 😉 No offence to anyone. I was actually in awe of their beauty when I was travelling abroad.
  3. Indulge in an exercise ,be it Swimming,Yoga,Pilates,Aerobics or home exercises daily. It could be anything.I do 15 min home workout in the morning that involves Yoga ,crunches, cardio and stretching. In the evening I devote myself to 1 hour brisk walking.I used to swim for 1 hour in the morning but my skin stopped me. 😦 Honestly, this makes a difference. My body toned faster due to swimming which everyone knows actually.Otherwise also, the exercises keep me active and fit the whole day.I don’t have any digestion problem or feel fatigued in the summers which is the season that drains you out.
  4. Fruit intake is a must.I eat atleast 1 fruit daily to combat water loss and have those nutrients in the system. If you have any deficiency, try to cure it by going for natural sources rather than popping a pill.Food gets digested easily than the artificial vitamins.
  5. Loose clothing is a winner. My style involves loose clothing year round since I feel suffocated in the body hugging attires. It is good for summers due to aeration and your sweat evaporates faster.
  6. I am more of a skincare person than makeup.CTM routine should be done twice a day to remove dirt and oil-buildup.In between, I blot my face or splash water. You can mist your face too for freshening your makeup and add hydration.
  7. It is best to go for light makeup in summers or go bare faced. It actually makes your life easier, trust me!You won’t have to worry about touching your face or wiping your makeup off when using a napkin.Your skin breathes literally.Your decision entirely though.
  8. Your body needs attention too.Summers make it more sensitive when you shave or wax.I get these itchy bumps more in summers due to hot weather and dryness.Waxing is more drying as it involves hot wax mostly and causes redness as well.Taking care of skin in such situations is very necessary. Both waxing and shaving are required,so make it easier by exfoliating before and after to make the hair easier to come out.Moisturize a lot and apply aloe vera post-session to reduce redness and rashes.I prefer shaving as it is easier to do,no special things are required and no heat required.Sharp razors do the trick so make sure yours is too.
  9. Lastly, stay happy and content.Everyone has problems, try to deal with it rather than stressing yourself.Stress causes most of the skin problems.

These are the tips which I follow myself and noticed a huge difference.Let me know,if you do something else during Summers.Feel free to share it with me in the comment section below. 🙂

Avene Eau Thermale Xeracalm AD cream review

Hi everyone!

People suffering from dry skin, sensitive skin and eczema-prone people swear by this brand. So last year,I also took the plunge and introduced this in my skincare. To be honest, the products have improved my skin texture, reduce redness and itching and control the symptoms to some extent. However, the cream was too rich to be used during the day,so I had to be patient while using them.I have a done a review on some of the products from the Trixera+ selectiose range of Avene.I will link them below.

Eau thermale Avene cold cream lip cream review

Avene Trixera+ Selectiose emollient cream review ( for dry/sensitive/eczema prone skin)

Recently, when I saw,Avene has come up with a new product for us people,I knew I have to get it.It is the Xeracalm AD cream ,balm and cleansing oil.I bought only the cream for myself after reading about them.

Availability: It is available mostly online everywhere.I got mine from UAE.But I just found out, this particular item is cheaper in India. 😛 I will provide all the links below.Rest of the world can find it in stores or Boots.

Price & quantity: Varies everywhere but it is a 200ml product which will last you a long time.

Avene XeraCalm A.D LipidReplenishing Cream 200ml/6.76oz

Avene Avène XeraCalm AD Lipid-Replenishing Cream

Avene Xeracalm AD cream-rediff

Packaging: Comes in the usual tube form with fliptop cap.It has a different opening mechanism as in you press the tube and a seal comes up as you keep on pressing. The product gradually comes up.The moment you stop squeezing, the seal goes back, but the product stays. This prevent contamination with the remaining cream.I give 5 star rating to this package.Very travel-friendly and hygienic. 🙂 Usage instructions are given on the tube and the box it comes in.Detailed ingredients are given on the box and it has a small pamphlet inside it.

Texture & fragrance: No smell at all.It is a very thick cream actually but the beauty of it lies after application. It looks like it will stay on top of the skin, but leave it,and within a moment, the cream gets absorbed and your skin looks dewy instead of matte or greasy.I like this actually.Perfect for day time.Just pat it gently on the dry areas and bam!its gone.Kudos!to the texture.

Ingredients: See for yourself.I went through all of them and pleased to see 90% ingredients comes from plants and so called microorganisms. 😛 I will try giving a brief info on the unknown ingredients. This cream boasts of no paraben & preservatives. Isn’t that amazing?

IMG_20160410_120240_1460270209106

cetearyl alcohol-These are fatty alcohols, conditions and softens the skin.

caprylic triglyceride-derived from coconut oil and glycerine, emollient

cetearyl glucoside-Can be obtained from cetearyl alcohol or coconut oil.Helps in mixing of oils in water.

Aquaphilus dolomiae- It is a bacteria found in thermal springs.Anti-irritating and soothing.

Arginine-Boosts collagen and heals wounds

Carbomer-Gives the creamy texture to the product.

Glycine-Wound healing

Tocopherol-Vit E…You know it.

My views: I have used it and I fell in love with it.I dab it in the places of  dryness and it gets absorbed easily and gives that dewy finish.

Even though its written that its good for severe dryness, but I feel the balm will work better for excessive dryness. This cream is good for sensitive skin and moderate to mild dryness.

It does reduce the itching sensation that I have due to my eczema patches on the face.

It also reduces redness due to rashes or sensitivity.Overall it gives a soothing effect to the skin.

This cream doesn’t cure the eczema or rashes but it will make it bearable so that we don’t scratch the skin or infect it.I will suggest everyone to try this who share dry skin issues. This cream is good for babies as well due to absence of preservatives and parabens.
